At Cuartas Advanced Dentistry, Transforming Smiles with Advanced Care is more than our motto, it’s our commitment to you. We’re excited to introduce how the innovative system from vVARDIS called Curodont is bringing a new level of minimally invasive dental care, especially in the early stages of decay.
What is Curodont and how does it work?
Curodont uses a self-assembling peptide (known scientifically as P11-4) that penetrates early, non-cavitated carious lesions, otherwise known as early-stage tooth decay. Once applied, the peptide creates a scaffold inside the lesion that attracts calcium and phosphate ions from saliva, helping rebuild hydroxyapatite crystals in the enamel. The result: potential regression (shrinkage) of the lesion without drilling and filling or, reversal of the decay.
What do the clinical studies say?
Here’s a summary of key research findings behind the technology:
- A systematic review & meta-analysis found that P11-4 products (including Curodont) likely have clinically important effects on caries arrest and decreasing lesion size.
- One randomized controlled trial reported that when Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus (i.e., P11-4 + fluoride) was compared to sodium fluoride varnish alone, there was ~60% less risk of caries progression at six months in the peptide group.
- Another study found that Curodont Repair (without added fluoride) resulted in about 42.3% of lesions being totally or partially remineralized, and 34.6% of lesions arrested after six months.
- For patients with orthodontic brackets (higher risk zones), a trial of Curodont Protect showed superior remineralization compared to fluoride varnish, helping prevent early de-mineralization.
- While the antibacterial effect (against Streptococcus mutans) of P11-4 was found to be comparable to fluoride varnish, casein-phosphopeptide systems showed somewhat superior reductions in some studies.
What this means for patients of Cuartas Advanced Dentistry
- Early Detection Matters: Because Curodont works best in non-cavitated (very early) lesions, our comprehensive dental exams are key to spotting issues early.
- Minimal Invasiveness: Instead of drilling, anesthesia or traditional “fillings” for early lesions, Curodont offers a gentler option aligned with our ethos of preserving natural tooth structure.
- Enhanced Prevention: Especially for patients with elevated risk (e.g., orthodontic appliances, early white-spot lesions, high sugar diet), this technology adds another layer of advanced care.
- Not a Replacement for All Treatments: While the data are promising, this isn’t a substitute for full restorations when the decay is advanced. It complements our preventive and restorative toolbox.
